The story

Omega launched the Speedmaster in 1957 as a chronograph with its tachymeter scale on the outer bezel. The first Speedmasters ran on the Lemania-based calibre 321 until 1968, when the cam-operated calibre 861 took over, and the Professional stayed almost unchanged until Omega moved to the calibre 1861 in the late 1990s with the reference 3570.50.

The 311.30.42.30.01.005 is the steel-on-steel Moonwatch with a Hesalite crystal and a steel caseback, and Fratello calls it the successor of the 3570.50. Fratello dates it from 2014 to 2020, and Monochrome Watches says the Moonwatch was on sale in this form until early 2021. It was one of four references: this one, a leather-strap Hesalite version (311.33.42.30.01.001), the sapphire sandwich with sapphire crystals front and back on steel (311.30.42.30.01.006), and its leather-strap twin (311.33.42.30.01.002).

In 2021 Omega replaced it with the 310.30.42.50.01.001, which uses the co-axial Master Chronometer calibre 3861 and has a 50-hour power reserve. That watch kept the 42mm case and 50-meter water resistance, and moved the bracelet from pin-and-tube construction to screws.

What to check before you buy

Do not confuse this reference with the sapphire sandwich. The 005 has a Hesalite crystal and a solid steel caseback, while the 006 has sapphire crystals front and back and a see-through caseback. Monochrome Watches lists all four references of this generation, so check the last digits of the reference on the paperwork.

The 005 is also separate from the 310.30.42.50.01.001 that replaced it in 2021. The newer watch has the calibre 3861, a bracelet held with screws instead of pins and tubes, and a caseback engraving that reads Flight-Qualified by NASA in 1965 for all manned space missions, where the older watches read the same without the year. The calibre 1861 was not submitted for chronometer certification, and Fratello says Omega advised on its website that it should run between minus one and plus ten seconds a day on average, so judge a watch's timekeeping against that rather than against a chronometer rating.
