The story
The Luminor case shape traces back to a 1950s Panerai patent for a crown-protecting bridge device, designed to shield the winding crown from impact and improve water sealing on the diving instruments Panerai built for the Italian Navy. The Luminor Marina name and civilian production version of that case were introduced to the public market in the early 1990s, giving the line its now familiar cushion-shaped case and lever-actuated crown guard. The Luminor Marina has gone through several movement generations since then, moving from the first automatic version based on a modified Valjoux 7750 to Panerai's in-house P.9010 caliber introduced in 2017 with a slimmer case profile. At Watches and Wonders 2025, Panerai updated the Luminor Marina again, introducing the P.980 caliber as PAM03312's engine and pushing water resistance to about 500 meters, a significant jump for a model historically rated closer to 100 to 300 meters. The P.980 adds a hacking seconds function, meaning the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled for time setting, a feature the outgoing P.9010 lacked, along with a traversing balance bridge visible through the newly added sapphire caseback. PAM03312 is the steel, black dial, rubber strap configuration that anchors the refreshed Luminor Marina range, replacing the previous generation reference PAM01312 as the standard model in the lineup.
