The story
The Air-King name dates back to 1945, when Rolex used it alongside sibling names such as Air-Lion and Air-Giant to mark watches associated with British aviation after the Second World War. The line survived in various forms for decades before Rolex paused it in 2014 and then revived it in 2016 as reference 116900, a 40mm steel watch with a simplified dial that borrowed its case and crown guards from the Explorer and Milgauss families of the period. Reference 126900 arrived at Watches and Wonders in 2022 as the direct successor to the 116900. The case size stayed at 40mm and the overall dial layout, with its bold Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 and a yellow accented five-minute track, carried over largely unchanged. The meaningful update was internal: the 116900's caliber 3131 was replaced by the caliber 3230, a movement built around the Chronergy escapement with a blue Parachrom hairspring, raising the power reserve from 48 hours to about 70 hours and adding a paramagnetic hairspring for better resistance to magnetic fields. Within the current Oyster Perpetual family, the Air-King occupies a plainer, more legibility focused spot than the dressier Datejust or the sport oriented Explorer, and it is one of the few current Rolex models without a date function.
