The story
The 5167A-001 is the standard men's Aquanaut in steel, introduced in 2007 to mark the Aquanaut collection's tenth anniversary and to succeed the original 506X series that had launched the model line in 1997. The Aquanaut itself was conceived as a more casual, younger-skewing companion to the Nautilus, sharing the porthole-inspired case language of Gerald Genta's 1976 Nautilus design but finished with a rubber strap and a case that reads less overtly nautical. Compared with the 506X generation it replaced, the 5167A brought a subtler embossed checkerboard dial pattern, refined case proportions, and Patek's then-new Caliber 324 S C automatic movement in place of earlier calibers used across the first Aquanaut references. The composite rubber strap, marketed by Patek as the Tropical strap, remained a defining element of the design, distinguishing the Aquanaut from the Nautilus's integrated metal bracelet even as both models share family resemblance in case shape. Since its introduction the 5167A-001 has become the most recognized entry point into steel Patek Philippe sports watches on a strap rather than a bracelet, and it has remained in continuous production for close to two decades. A bracelet-equipped sibling, the 5167/1A, was introduced later and discontinued in 2025, leaving the strap-based 5167A-001 as the model's standard configuration.

Confirm whether the watch on offer is the 5167A-001 on its rubber strap or the related but distinct 5167/1A on a steel bracelet, since the two have different case backs, different clasps, and very different secondary market pricing, with the bracelet version discontinued in 2025. Because the rubber strap ages and can crack or discolor over years of wear, check strap condition carefully, and confirm whether the strap is an original Patek part or an aftermarket replacement.
