The story
Gerald Genta designed the original Nautilus, ref. 3700/1A, in 1976, giving Patek Philippe its own steel sports watch with a porthole inspired case and an integrated bracelet. Patek revived the idea for the model's 30th anniversary in November 2006, launching ref. 5711/1A as the new Jumbo alongside a smaller 5800/1A that replaced the old mid-size 3800/1A. The 5711/1A kept the two hand and date layout of the original but moved to a three part case construction, with a separate screw down caseback in place of the earlier porthole style two-piece case.
Over its production run the 5711/1A's movement evolved from the original calibre 315 SC to the calibre 26-330 S C, which added a stop-seconds function so the watch can be set to the second, along with a power reserve of up to 45 hours. Dial colors moved from the launch black through a well known blue (ref. 5711/1A-010) that became the reference's signature look and the watch most people picture when they think of a steel Nautilus.
On January 25, 2021, Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern announced that the steel 5711/1A would be discontinued, explaining that he did not want a single model to dominate the brand's image. Patek closed out the reference with two final executions: an olive green dial (ref. 5711/1A-014) released in April 2021, and a limited run of 170 pieces with a Tiffany Blue dial (ref. 5711/1A-018) released in December 2021 to mark 170 years of the Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. relationship, sold only through select Tiffany boutiques. Those two closing dials, especially the Tiffany piece, are now treated as the definitive send-off for the reference.
