The story
The no-date Submariner has had its own thread since the 1950s, and the modern story starts with the 14060 of 1990, which Fratello credits with bringing a sapphire crystal to the no-date watch along with the calibre 3000, a movement Rolex did not submit for chronometer certification. That left the dial with only two lines of text above six o'clock, the two-liner collectors still talk about. In 1999 the calibre 3130, with a Breguet overcoil hairspring and a full balance bridge, took its place and the reference became the 14060M. In 2007 Rolex had the same movement certified and added the Superlative Chronometer lines, making it the four-liner.
The 114060 replaced the 14060M in 2012. Monochrome Watches describes it as virtually identical to the 116610LN Submariner Date of 2010 apart from the date: the broader case with block-like lugs, the unidirectional Cerachrom ceramic bezel with platinum in its graduations, the Maxi dial with 18k white gold markers and hands filled with blue Chromalight, and the Oyster bracelet whose Glidelock clasp extends by up to 20mm in 2mm steps without tools. Time+Tide lists the 904L steel case at 40mm across, 48mm from lug to lug and 12.5mm thick, with a Triplock crown and a 300-meter rating. The calibre 3130 stayed, now certified as a Superlative Chronometer with about 48 hours of reserve, and the watch came in one configuration only, steel with a black dial and black bezel.
In September 2020 Rolex replaced it with the 41mm 124060, which Monochrome reviewed as the direct successor: the calibre 3230 with about 70 hours of reserve, lugs widened from 20mm to 21mm, slimmer and more angled lugs and redesigned crown guards.
What to check before you buy
The case is the first thing to judge in person. aBlogtoWatch's long-term review says the 114060 wears more like a 42mm watch because of its wide lugs, and buyers moving up from a 14060M or across to a 124060 should try one on rather than trust the 40mm figure. Telling the generations apart is easy once you know the markers: a 14060M has an aluminum insert, drilled lugs and stamped end links, the 114060 has the ceramic insert and solid case with no lug holes, and the 124060 has the 21mm bracelet and slimmer lugs.
On the watch itself, check that the Cerachrom insert has no chips at its edge, since the ceramic resists scratches but not a hard knock, that the bezel clicks evenly all the way round, and that the Glidelock slides and locks at each of its positions. Time+Tide notes each bracelet link is held by a screw, so a bracelet that has been shortened should have come with its spare links. There is no date, so there is no Cyclops: a 40mm ceramic Submariner with a magnifier is a 116610LN, not this watch.

Common questions
When was the Submariner 114060 made?
From 2012, when it replaced the 14060M, until September 2020, when the 41mm 124060 took its place.
What movement is in the 114060?
The Rolex calibre 3130, an automatic with a full balance bridge, certified as a Superlative Chronometer and giving about 48 hours of power reserve. The 124060 moved to the calibre 3230 with about 70 hours.
What is the difference between the 114060 and the 116610LN?
The date. The 116610LN is the Submariner Date with a date window and Cyclops lens and the calibre 3135; the 114060 has a clean dial, no Cyclops and the calibre 3130. Case, bezel and bracelet are otherwise the same.
How does the 114060 differ from the 124060 that replaced it?
The 124060 of 2020 has a 41mm case with slimmer, more angled lugs, a 21mm bracelet instead of 20mm, redesigned crown guards and the calibre 3230 with about 70 hours of power reserve against the 3130's roughly 48.
Does the 114060 bezel scratch?
The Cerachrom ceramic insert resists scratches and does not fade, and its graduations are filled with platinum. It can chip at the edge if the watch takes a hard knock, so check the rim closely on a used watch.
