The story

Tudor launched the Black Bay Fifty-Eight in 2018 as a smaller, 39mm, vintage-inspired take on its Black Bay dive watch. At Watches & Wonders in April 2021 it added two new case materials, yellow gold and silver.

The silver watch is the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925, reference 79010SG. The 925 refers to sterling silver, which is 92.5 percent silver by weight. Tudor says it is the first time the brand has used 925 silver for a diver's watch, and it keeps the composition of the alloy secret. The brand also says the properties of the alloy mean use does not affect the appearance of the case. This was also the first Black Bay Fifty-Eight with an open caseback showing the MT5400 movement, and it kept the 200-meter water resistance.

The press was curious about the choice. Worn & Wound called a silver Black Bay 58 borderline inexplicable at first but quite beautiful, and noted that people would ask whether silver is soft for a dive watch. Time+Tide wondered how well silver would hold up in daily wear.

What to check before you buy

The case is sterling silver, and Tudor says the alloy was chosen so that use does not affect its appearance. Because the writers who reviewed the watch at launch wondered how silver would wear on a dive watch, look closely at the case, lugs and crown for knocks and scratches on any example you consider. The reference tells you the strap it came on: M79010SG-0001 is the brown leather strap and M79010SG-0002 is the taupe fabric strap with a silver band, and both are sold with a 925 silver buckle.

This is a different watch from the steel Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79030N, with a taupe dial and a taupe aluminum bezel insert in place of black. It also has an open caseback, which the steel watch did not have when this model launched. Time+Tide noted that the exhibition caseback adds less than a millimeter of thickness while the watch keeps its 200-meter rating.
