The story
The Tudor Ranger name dates to 1963 and the ref. 7995, a no-frills 34mm tool watch built as a less expensive alternative to the Rolex Explorer, with large luminescent Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 that became the model's defining feature. Tudor revived the name in 2014 with the Heritage Ranger, ref. 79910, a 41mm watch built on the Black Bay case platform, which stayed in the catalog until around 2020. The current Ranger, ref. 79950, was introduced in 2022 to mark the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition, an event historically tied to Tudor's Oyster Prince watches. Rather than continuing the Black Bay-derived case of the 79910, the 79950 uses a smaller, 39mm case closer in spirit to the original 1960s dimensions, and it drops the crown guards and dive bezel of the Black Bay family in favor of a simpler, fixed smooth bezel. The 79950 shares its Caliber MT5402 movement with the Black Bay Fifty-Eight.

Buyers should be clear about which Ranger generation they are looking at, since the 2014 Heritage Ranger (79910) and the 2022 Ranger (79950) share a name and a similar dial concept but differ substantially in case size, case shape, and movement, and are priced differently on the secondhand market as a result. The 79950's smooth fixed bezel and lack of crown guards are useful visual cues for telling it apart from Black Bay models at a glance. As with the Black Bay Fifty-Eight, the MT5402 movement is generally considered reliable, and buyers should ask for service history on older examples.
