Why it matters

Moonwatch is the nickname for the Omega Speedmaster Professional, the watch that NASA certified for spaceflight in 1965 and that Buzz Aldrin wore on the lunar surface in 1969. The current Moonwatch reference is direct descendant of that original model.

Moonwatch listings are common on the secondary market because the watch sells in volume. The reference number and which caliber the watch uses (321 vintage, 861, 1861, or 3861) are the questions that drive condition and price.

Common questions

What is a Moonwatch?
Moonwatch is the nickname for the Omega Speedmaster Professional, the chronograph that NASA flight-qualified in 1965 and that astronauts wore during the Apollo missions.
Is every Speedmaster a Moonwatch?
No. Moonwatch refers specifically to the Speedmaster Professional manual-wind line that descends from the original NASA-qualified reference. Other Speedmaster variants (automatic, racing dials, special editions) are not strictly Moonwatches.
