The story

Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak Selfwinding line is the more robust, mainstream cousin of the ultra-thin Jumbo. Its first reference, the 15300, was a 39mm automatic powered by the in-house calibre 3120, and Fratello says it was made from 2005 until 2011.

In 2012 the 15400 replaced it. Audemars Piguet enlarged the case to 41mm and kept the calibre 3120 inside. Monochrome Watches says the update brought a new dial made in-house on turning machines, new fonts and a logo placed below the marker at 12 o'clock. At SIHH 2015 the brand added a two-tone steel and gold version, the 15400SR.

The 15400 was produced until early 2019. It was replaced by the 15500ST, shown at SIHH 2019, which has a new calibre 4302 movement, a date window moved to the edge of the dial and a case 10.4mm thick against 9.8mm for the 15400.

What to check before you buy

The dial is the quickest way to separate the 15400 from the 15500ST that replaced it. On the 15400 the Grande Tapisserie pattern covers the whole dial, including the minute track, the word Automatic sits at 6 o'clock, and the date window sits well in toward the middle with a small applied hour marker next to it. The 15500 has a smooth minute track around the edge and moves the date to the periphery.

The case is 41mm and 9.8mm thick, and through the caseback you see the calibre 3120, which is 26.6mm across. Monochrome Watches notes some collectors found it small for a 41mm case, while calling it a reliable, precise engine. The 15400 reference also covers a two-tone steel and gold version, the 15400SR, so check the suffix on the paperwork.
