The story
The 16202ST is the current generation of the Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin, launched in January 2022 to coincide with the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary and to replace the long-serving reference 15202ST. The Jumbo nameplate goes back to the very first Royal Oak, reference 5402, released in 1972 in a 39mm case that was considered oversized for a steel sports watch at the time. Later generations carried the name through references 14802, 15002, and 15202 before the 16202 took over. The defining change in the 16202ST is the movement. Where the 15202ST used the Calibre 2121, an automatic movement based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre ebauche that AP had used in various Royal Oak references since the 1970s, the 16202ST introduced the Calibre 7121, a newly developed in-house automatic movement built specifically for the extra-thin Jumbo case. The 7121 is slightly larger and thicker than the outgoing 2121, uses more components, and offers a longer power reserve of around 55 hours compared with roughly 40 hours on the older caliber, while also adding a sapphire caseback that the 15202ST's solid caseback did not have. Because the 15202ST is now the last Jumbo built around the historic 2121 movement, it has developed its own following among collectors who prize that mechanical lineage, even as the 16202ST becomes the standard current Jumbo reference.
What to check before you buy
Confirm which movement generation is in the watch, since the 15202ST (Calibre 2121) and 16202ST (Calibre 7121) look similar at a glance but differ in case thickness, caseback design, and movement architecture, and command different premiums on the secondary market. Early 16202ST examples from 2022 were produced as 50th Anniversary pieces with a special engraved rotor visible through the sapphire caseback, before AP moved to a standard rotor on later production, so ask specifically whether the rotor is the anniversary version if that matters to the buyer. Because the extra-thin case leaves little room for movement modification, servicing should only be done by AP or an AP-authorized workshop.
