The story
Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak at the Basel fair in 1972 as the reference 5402, a 39mm steel sports watch powered by the ultra-thin automatic calibre 2121. The Jumbo returned several times in later decades. Fratello says the 15002 was a short-lived reference from 1996 to 1997, and Monochrome Watches reports that by 1999 Audemars Piguet was ready for a new generation, planning 250 steel and 50 gold pieces for 2000 under the reference 15202, unveiled at SIHH.
The first-generation 15202 had Grande Tapisserie dials in two blues and a silver tone, a three-piece case with a sapphire caseback, and water resistance that Monochrome says dropped by 50 meters from earlier Jumbos. Around 2002 Audemars Piguet began producing the calibre 2121 in-house, after its partnership with Jaeger-LeCoultre ended.
For the Royal Oak's 40th anniversary in 2012, the 15202 returned to the Petite Tapisserie dial pattern of the early models, in the Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 shade, with the AP logo back at 6 o'clock. Fratello adds that the bracelet became a little thicker and gained a double-folding clasp, and that the brand started calling the watch Extra-Thin rather than Jumbo. By the mid-2010s the 15202 was the only 39mm Royal Oak in the collection.
Audemars Piguet ended the 15202 line with a one-off titanium Jumbo for Only Watch 2021. In 2022, for the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary, the 16202 replaced it with the new calibre 7121.
What to check before you buy
Two dial generations sit under the same reference. The first-generation 15202 has Grande Tapisserie dials, while watches made after the 2012 update have the Petite Tapisserie pattern, the AP logo at 6 o'clock and a thicker bracelet with a double-folding clasp. Confirm which generation you are being offered and that the dial, bracelet and clasp belong together.
The 15202ST and the 16202ST that replaced it look very similar from the front. The easy check is the movement through the caseback: the 15202 has the calibre 2121 at 28mm, 3.05mm thick, 19,800 vibrations an hour and about 40 hours of power reserve, while the 16202 has the calibre 7121 at 29.6mm, 3.2mm thick, 28,800 vibrations an hour and 55 hours. The 15202ST is the stainless steel version, and the 15202 was also made in gold, platinum and mixed metals under other suffixes such as BA, OR, IP and PT.

Common questions
What movement does the 15202ST have?
The calibre 2121, an ultra-thin automatic with date. Monochrome Watches lists it at 3.05mm thick with a 40-hour power reserve and a beat of 19,800 vibrations an hour.
Is the 15202ST the same as the 16202ST?
No. The 16202ST replaced the 15202ST in 2022 with a new calibre 7121, which is 29.6mm across and 3.2mm thick and has a 55-hour power reserve.
Why is it called Jumbo and Extra-Thin?
Jumbo comes from the original 39mm case, which was large for 1972. Fratello says Audemars Piguet began calling the 15202 Extra-Thin after the 2012 update, once the Jumbo name made less sense next to larger watches.
When was the 15202 introduced and when did it end?
Monochrome Watches reports a debut at SIHH around 2000, with the 16202 taking over in 2022 after Audemars Piguet closed the 15202 line with a one-off Only Watch piece in 2021.
How thick is the 15202ST?
Fratello gives the case thickness of the 15202ST as 8.1mm.
