The story

Patek Philippe launched the Aquanaut at Baselworld in 1997 as the reference 5060A, a steel sports watch that took the Nautilus's rounded octagonal shape and added a rubber strap, a first for the brand. It was aimed at a younger buyer and was less expensive and less formal than the Nautilus.

In 2017, for the Aquanaut's twentieth anniversary, Patek presented the Jumbo 5168G-001. Monochrome Watches describes it as the largest and first white gold Aquanaut, with a 42.2mm case, a blue dial with a gradient and a matching strap. It was a departure from the compact steel 5167A, and the press called it a love-it-or-hate-it piece when it appeared.

At Baselworld 2019 Patek added the 5168G-010 with a khaki green dial and strap. Monochrome says it is the same watch as the blue one in every dimension and material, just in a different color. It was not Patek's first green Aquanaut. In 2011 the brand made a very small run of a steel 5167A-010 in khaki green for special clients. Patek Philippe lists both the 5168G-001 and the 5168G-010 on its site today.

What to check before you buy

The two dials are the 5168G-001 in blue and the 5168G-010 in khaki green. Everything else is the same, so confirm the suffix on the paperwork and check that the dial and strap match. The embossed pattern on the dial continues onto the strap, and the date window replaces the 3 numeral with a white background that contrasts with the dial color. Monochrome Watches notes that khaki green rubber straps became sought-after accessories among Aquanaut owners, so check that a strap on a 5168G is the original Patek one.

The case is white gold only, with no steel option, and Patek lists the water resistance at 30 meters, so treat it as a dress-leaning sports watch rather than a diver. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback. Patek rates the power reserve at 35 to 45 hours, so a watch that has sat unwound for a few days will need setting again.

What is the difference between the 5168G-001 and the 5168G-010?

The colors. The 5168G-001 has a blue dial with a black gradient rim and a midnight blue strap, and the 5168G-010 has a khaki green dial and strap. Monochrome Watches says the specifications, dimensions, materials, hands and dial pattern are otherwise identical.

When did Patek introduce the 5168G?

The blue 5168G-001 arrived in 2017 for the Aquanaut's twentieth anniversary, and the khaki green 5168G-010 followed at Baselworld in March 2019.

What is the power reserve?

Patek Philippe lists a minimum of 35 hours and a maximum of 45 hours for the 26-330 S C movement.

Does the 5168G come in steel?

No. Patek makes the 5168G in white gold only, and Monochrome Watches noted at launch that there was no stainless steel option.
